National Disability Employment Awareness Month

National Disability Employment Awareness Month

October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM), and this year is our nation’s 75th observance of NDEAM.  The theme for this year is “Increasing Access and Opportunity.” This month is recognized to remind us and bring renewed awareness to the importance of inclusive hiring practices.

Jennifer Sheehy, the Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Office of Disability Employment Policy at the US Department of Labor, captures the essence of this month in her following statement – “People with disabilities are experienced problem solvers with a proven ability to adapt.  Now more than ever, flexibility is important for both workers and employers. National Disability Employment Awareness Month celebrates the ingenuity people with disabilities bring to America’s workplaces.”

Here at GSIL we have many programs and services to support people with disabilities so that they can succeed on the job.  We offer Earn & Learn and IMPACCT Academy to youth that need academic options to reengage in learning, define career goals, learn soft skills and participate in internships.  In 2019, GSIL assisted 431 people with disabilities throughout NH move toward their employment goals, through our job placement support, skills training, benefits counseling and resources for accessibility and accommodations.
