Sarah Sweeney

Sarah lives in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. Advocating for people with disabilities has been a central part of Sarah’s life, starting when she was just 13, with her first appointment to the Statewide Independent Living Council. She learned to advocate for herself in school and other areas of life by watching her mother, who advocated not only for Sarah but for others with disabilities. Years later, Sarah is now on the CouncilI herself, serving her second term.

Over the years, she has participated in marches on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C., for disability rights and attended national conferences. She holds a bachelor’s and master’s degree in social work and has a deep interest in understanding people’s stories and what motivates them. She has even worked with AmeriCorps in Austin, Texas, helping to support elementary and middle school students to help them succeed.

Through her advocacy, Sarah has seen how crucial employment and mental health are for people with disabilities. She states, “My involvement with the “We Live Without Limits” program at Fowler International Academy highlights my dedication to breaking barriers, as the program is designed by and for individuals with disabilities. I also write for online publications to share insights and stories about living with a disability. By focusing on education and skill development, I strive to help all individuals reach their full potential.”

Looking ahead, Sarah plans to continue her advocacy, start life coaching for individuals and groups, and continue to share her story through public speaking and other activities!
